'Right Half Back' borrows a football position to talk about ambition and class: 'Out in the world / Thay thought I took a second for sure,' yet 'The biggest load I could get, / was even better / than what I was taught,' experience outrunning instruction. The poem then pivots to a cool, almost taunting pity - 'I am sincerely sorry / for so many of you / You can't even try / To be a native son' - making birthright, not effort, the thing the speaker holds over his audience.
