By Jack Joseph Smith

Almost complete with a ready- ness for it, his ribs were strumed by the tight ribbons of his nervious system, and a small tight ball like lead had sunk into his solarplexes to a place impossible to defici- ate from. The sickness in his throat soured, as if belts of iron could come so immediate from an industrial stream. An inside power through his balls of spit, had he wondered at no planned magnet taking his place. If he could just deficate, come clean, but that was out of the question now, this whole being survived only on the beginning of going down!

The page describes bodily sickness, dread, and collapse as if the self were being industrially tightened from the inside.

Its language is visceral and mechanical at once. The corrected handwriting makes the body feel even more like a pressured system: ribs, nervous ribbons, a leaden ball, spit, and the impossible need to come clean.

A visceral collapse rendered in industrial metaphor: ribs 'strumed by the tight ribbons / of his nervious system,' a 'small tight ball like lead' sunk into 'his solarplexes,' the throat's sickness souring 'as if belts of / iron could come so immediate / from an industrial stream.' The body is a pressured machine. The bleak crux is excremental relief withheld - 'If he could just deficate, / come clean, but that was out / of the question now' - so that 'this whole / being survived only on the / beginning of going down.'
