By Jack Joseph Smith

Detective SPECIAL 38 stub nose Smith & Weston Patrick walked to the bathroom from the dark back bedroom off sharp slanting steps that was supposed to connect a pantry in one of those long one floor wooden sheeted sand houses. The husband was standing between the back of the door and the mirror with a gun in his hand. Patrick was going to take a leak before he did anything. If only it would have been an eighth of a blink instead of a fourth of one. But now a gun was remaining level to his head a couple of feet the other side of the ceiling light. However, it clicked. Now Patrick was beating the man with the piece. Out of the bathroom with his motion he beat him. Down a beginning to be frantic hallway he beat him out into the front room crowd. Which was no place to be, Gibby was suddenly thinking. In his own time said Gibby to himself. "Now what the hell do I do about that fuckin jaggoff and the gun?" "Get the fuck outside Patrick! And with the gun!" But Patrick was already moving fast through the vicious folly. Off the front porch and turning in the yard he was relieved of the gun by his brother Bob who took it on a strut out into the black night. Gibby was hitting while moving backward off the porch. But only three of the crowd followed him down the steps. They had baseball bats, and Gibby was taking some good blows on his forearms as he backed out toward the sidewalk where Patrick was moving in circles with his eyes filled with piss and expectation.

The scan-verified page adds a handwritten gun annotation and follows Patrick from a bathroom ambush into a house-and-yard brawl after the gun clicks instead of firing.

The corrected transcript makes the scene more mechanical and chaotic at once: the Detective SPECIAL note frames the weapon, the inserted eighth tightens the timing, and Gibby's shouted calculations keep the violence awkward, fast, and remembered in fragments.
