Feline & Fallow The place is Western Oregon. First you see a river. It is at the Western end of the huge Willimatte Valley. It is autum time. And the land and the air and what has happened in the fields and in the gardens and across the orchards is colorfully clear. Now appears another river that is thiner than the Willimatte. It is the Long Tom. Across it are unkept fruit trees wild with quince and prunes. Coming over the trees is a great gabled house with an immence garden fallen to its back stoop. Looking off to the back south of the house one can see machinery and trucks and Vans and old auto's and brand new cars that appear strange for the setting. Hound dogs, sheep dogs, a coyote, and a couple Saint Bernard's wonder around and howl with a pretty young women out there putting them in their time slot of chain to freedom; freedom to chain. There are exactly eight full fured cats about the stoop paying absolutely no attention to all of it. We enter the home from the East, which is the back side we have begun to see. It is getting late into the afternoon so that the south sun shoves good light into a wood shed stacked to the roof beams with madrone and oak and red wood and cedar and fur; that is seen through an enclosed off porch walkway lined with the finest tools that could be made in the 1930's. There we notice a swinging pantery squeek- ing on its hinges. We have missed the door; but when we have turned back we see maybe 300 gallons of wine leaning on wooden shelves. The young lady has finished with the dogs and we follow her past a freezer door through a kitchen. Four other women work in the kitchen. But they are different than the lady we have already seen. Her name is Jo. Jo is streight of mind and you can see in her face that she is upset with the loud voices coming from the outer rooms. The other ladies are very smooth and very sexually tempting; they are hippies. Jo is the boss. Two pantries off the kitchen are filled with herbs, and there are about two thousand Ball and Kern jars that are in the process of being filled. But you have a call to Pittsburgh

'Feline & Fallow' establishes the Western Oregon house through river, valley, dogs, cats, wood, wine, tools, kitchen work, and Jo's authority.

The page works like a camera entering the Monroe house from landscape into household economy. Its abundance is practical rather than decorative: animals, wood, wine, tools, jars, herbs, and kitchen labor define Jo's domain before the Pittsburgh call interrupts it.

A Western Oregon establishing page moves from river, valley, Long Tom, a gabled house, gardens, dogs, cats, wood sheds, wine shelves, and a kitchen where Jo directs the household.

The page works like a camera setup for the Monroe house. Its social map is built from animals, stored food and wine, tools, wood, women in the kitchen, and Jo's authority over a crowded rural household.
