and girls playing and asked them if I could play too. There were two red head ed girls playing from different families and they were both sort of leaders that were against each other. I brought them together and they both said no that I couldn't, at the same time. I didn't know how to reach them because they were older than me, so I just stood there quietly. They started to laugh saying I was too fat to play. I couldn't understand that, and I looked around thinking that I wasn't any bigger than anybody else. Then they asked Danial to play saying he could but I couldn't. He just looked at them with out saying anything and then looked at me and asked me if I would like to play in his garage with him. I walked toward him smiling and when I came to him we started walking together up his driveway and into this great big garage with a high high ceiling. There were shields and swords that knights would have used to fight with hanging on one of the long walls. He reached up and unhooked two shields and two swords from there places and handed a set to me. I held the long thin foil tight in my hand and brought the shield up close to my chest, as he did the same, and then we stood there facing each other in our friendship. Do you know how to sword fight? he said. No, I answered; I have never had a sword like this. These are French, and you can be faster with these than with any other sword, he said. Are there really crazy people in Kennedy forest? I asked him. Lets go looking for them. Okey; Will you teach me how to sword fight? Sure.

Rejected by older children at softball, the child is drawn instead into Daniel's garage of shields and French swords, where friendship immediately links play-fighting to Kennedy forest and the lure of crazy people.

Humiliation at the game is brief but sharp, and Daniel answers it by making a private world that is older, stranger, and more binding than neighborhood play. The fencing gear turns companionship into alliance almost at once, with danger and fantasy already folded into their first exchange.

The two leader 'red head ed girls', briefly united only to reject him, laugh 'that I was too fat to play', a humiliation he can't square with himself ('I wasn't any bigger than anybody else'). Danial answers the slight by withdrawing him into a richer world: his garage 'with a high high ceiling', hung with 'shields and swords that knights would have used', where he hands over a set and they stand 'facing each other in our friendship'. The alliance forms instantly, danger and fantasy already folded in - 'These are French, and you can be faster with these' - and the talk turns at once to 'crazy people in Kennedy forest': 'Lets go looking for them.'
